Ages 10-16

A Mountain Bike Team for the Youth of NWA

The Gnarlies program is built for NWA Youth who are ready to push their limits, explore new terrain, and grow as athletes and teammates. Each session blends advanced skill development — climbing, cornering, line choice, and feature work — with leadership, confidence, and trail awareness.

Who It’s For

This program is for 10-16-year-old shredders who are already riding green or blue trails and are ready for more intentional progression. They are excited to ride, learn, and make friends.

We offer daytime sessions for homeschool students and afternoon sessions for traditional school students, so everyone has an opportunity to build their riding community.

How It’s Different

Gnarlies isn’t just another bike club; it’s a team coaching program led by a certified coach — our athletes ride with the same coach and the same team of students for the whole season. Our groups are smaller and our camaraderie is bigger. Each athlete gets more time, more attention, and the opportunity to build closer relationships with their peers.

Why Choose Gnarlies

Parents choose Gnarlies because it’s more than just a group ride. We build skills, confidence, character, and community as we explore the trails and experience the joy and fun of mountain biking! These young-adults finish the season stronger, braver, and eager for the next adventure.

Ride AssesSment

One on One

We start by getting to know your rider — their maturity, experience, confidence, and comfort level through a private one-on-one ride. This helps us place each rider in the right skill group to ensure safety, challenge, and success.

02

Group Assignment

Intentional Group Dynamics

Based on their ride assessment, students are grouped by ability each season, so every athlete can progress at their own pace with other riders of similar skill. Small ratios (1:5) mean personalized coaching and strong camaraderie among the team.

03

session Availability

Find a Scheduling Option

Because group dynamics and consistency are a priority, limited scheduling options are available. Returning riders receive priority placement each season.

If the sessions that best fit your rider’s skills and schedule are full, a waitlist is available if/when a placement becomes available. This helps keep teams growing together and ensures every group feels connected, supported, and ready to ride.

Get Gnarly!

Register for the Season

Once registered, your rider joins the team! We’ll provide location details, gear checklists, and consistent communication on what to expect. Then it’s all about building skill, confidence, and community — one trail at a time. As the season progresses, you will get weekly photos and videos of ride sessions so you can stay in the loop about your rider’s progression.

Prepare to Get Gnarly

Before requesting a Gnarlies ride assessment, riders should already be safely and comfortably handling green-level singletrack trails such as All-American. They should be confident standing on their pedals, using their handbrakes consistently, and riding over small tabletops and rollers. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are just as important as bike skills — we’re looking for athletes who are ready to grow, listen, and have fun while doing it.

Our goal is to keep every rider safe, prepared, and confident. The right equipment helps make that happen.

Required Equipment

Gear required for every ride.
  • A well-fitted mountain bike in good working condition
    • Front suspension is mandatory, full suspension is recommended
  • Full-Face Helmet
  • Knee pads
    • Mandatory. We have a one-strike policy for knee pads; if forgotten a second time, your rider will be sent home.
  • Closed-toe athletic shoes
    • Crocs and sandals are strictly prohibited. Zero tolerance, your rider will be sent home if they arrive with inappropriate footwear.
  • Water bottle or hydration pack
    • A hydration pack is preferred, but a bicycle-specific water bottle that fits in bottle cage is permitted.
  • Snack
    • One or more for every ride. Continuous nutrition and caloric intake are essential.

Recommended Equipment

Optional gear, recommended by coaches and parents
  • Gloves for protection and grip
  • Elbow pads
  • Eye protection (clear or tinted lenses)

Winter Requirements

Specific gear is required during the winter season that may be optional at other times of the year.

  • Gloves
    • Required for winter sessions to keep hands warm and safe.
  • Forward Facing Light (bar or helmet-mounted)
    • Required for all afternoon programs during the winter months to ensure visibility and safety.
  • Rear Facing Light
    • Required for all afternoon programs during the winter months to ensure visibility and safety.
  • Appropriate layers
    • Bring warm or waterproof, appropriate layers that can be easily removed as riders heat up on climbs. A pack to store them in.

Riders are responsible for bringing and carrying their own equipment. Responsibility is a Gnarlies value.

What do you consider an intermediate or advanced rider?

Intermediate Gnarlies are comfortable on green and blue singletrack trails, excited to improve their jumping, and enthusiastic about building their overall bike skills and endurance. Advanced Gnarlies are already riding technical trails, love to get some air, and they are stoked to advance their skills even further. We’ll do an assessment ride with your athlete to find the group that best matches their skills and goals.

How can I set up an Assessment Ride?

Visit our contact us page and send us a message, or give us a call/text at 479-222-1073.

What happens if it rains or the trails are closed?

While safety is a priority, we strive to build gritty, resilient youth who respect the trails and make good choices. If lightning or other unsafe conditions are present, we will reschedule the ride to a predetermined rain date. Otherwise, we gear up, choose wet-weather routes, and come back stronger, more capable humans that don’t give up just because we’re uncomfortable.

Do you do jumps or drops?

Absolutely — but only with plenty of focus on fundamentals first. We work through age-appropriate, closely supervised progressions that stay within each rider’s comfort and skill level. Coach Sam is PMBIA Level 2 Air Certified, which means every jump or drop we teach is built on proper technique and smart progression — never on guesswork or peer pressure.

We know these students love to get their wheels off the ground, and we help them do with intentional technique — when they’re ready.

What kind of bike and equipment does my athlete need?

Gnarlies is a mountain bike-specific program, and mountain bikes are required. This means bikes must have gears and disc brakes. A front suspension is mandatory but a full suspension is recommended. All Gnarlies wear full-face helmets and knee pads. They are required to have a hydration pack or water bottle, a snack, and basic tools and tire fixes. Gloves, elbow pads, and chest protectors are optional but encouraged. In the winter, students who ride in the afternoon sessions are required to have a bright white forward-facing light and a rear-facing red light as well. Other reflective clothing and gear is strongly encouraged.

My athlete has an e-bike, can they participate?

Class I pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on a case-by-case basis, usually by medical necessity. We want to make sure all athletes have the opportunity to ride, but we also strive to keep things fair. We do not allow e-bikes when unsafe or disruptive to the overall group dynamic. Please reach out and schedule an assessment ride for approval.

How long are sessions?

Session length depends on the level, time of day, and time of year. We aim for 2 hour sessions as your riders will get the most out of the experience, but will also do 1hr 45 minute sessions in the depths of winter. Session length is always communicated in advance and factored into overall program costs.

What trails do you ride?

We rotate between a variety of local trail locations throughout the season to give riders experience on different terrain, features, and environments. Each session is planned with skill progression and safety in mind — starting on smoother, flowier trails and gradually introducing more technical elements as riders improve.

Some rides even start and end at different trailheads, creating a fun, point-to-point experience that feels like a mini shuttle adventure rather than a simple loop. Variety keeps things exciting and helps riders build confidence on a wide range of trails and conditions.
